The Basics

    1. The Sleeper
First hold the yo-yo in your hand with your palm up. Make sure the yo-yo string is running out from the top of the yo-yo and not from underneath the yo-yo. This is shown in diagram 1. Next curl your hand and wrist and bring your arm up as if you were making a muscle ( diagram 2). Then with a little force and snap throw the yo-yo down. Stop your arm when it is about at your waist. Your arm should be at about a 90 degree angle ( diagram 3). Once the yo-yo leaves your hand and is down at the bottom of the string, flip your hand over so your palm is facing towards the ground ( diagram 4). Give a little pull with your wrist, the yo-yo should return.

    2. Walk the Dog
First throw a long sleeper, then gently set the yo-yo on the ground by your feet and let the yo-yo walk out in front of you. When it starts walking, walk along with it and give it a little tug to return before the sleeper dies and your dog lies on the ground motionless.

    3. The Creeper
This trick is very similar to walk the dog, except the yo-yo and string will run parallel to the ground. To do this throw a long sleeper and gently swing the yo-yo out in front of you and let it gently go on the ground. Once the yo-yo is on the ground bend down and rest your hand on the ground so that your palm is facing the yo-yo. Give the yo-yo a little tug and the yo-yo should return to your hand. Be sure to pull it back before the sleeper dies. Also this trick is done easier if the ground or surface is smooth.

    4. Foward pass
To do this trick you put your arm by your side with your palm facing behind you. In one smooth motion you swing your arm out straight so that it's parallel to the ground. You should have let go of the yo-yo before your arm was fully extended. Once your arm is fully extended turn your hand over so your palm is facing upwards and catch the yo-yo when it comes back.

    5. Breakaway
This trick require a side sleeper. First you make a muscle so that your elbow is pointing out to the side. Then you throw the sleeper, bringing your arm down and across your body in an arc. The yo-yo should swing up to your opposite shoulder. Your arm should be stopped by your waist. Have your palm facing up, ready to catch the yo-yo. If you contine with this trick you can do sideways around the world.

    6. Man on the Flying Trapeze
To do this trick you start the same as the breakaway, except instead of the yo-yo swinging all the way to your shoulder, and then catching, you catch the yo-yo on the string. If you use the yo-yo in your right hand you, stick your left index finger straight out, pointing in front of you. The placement of your left hand should be about waist level with your palm facing down. Now once you get your left hand in position, throw the yo-yo like a breakaway. AND HOPE! Actually this trick requires a good amount of practice and patience. Some tips are the closer you get your left finger to the yo-yo at the end of the string, the more chance you have of landing it. You might try this trick going from a sideways around the world. NOW once you land it you want to have the yo-yo slide towad the middle of the string, you do this by bringing both your hands closer together. Once you have the yo-yo there, give it a little swing by moving your hands gently back and forth. Pull your hands apart to pop the yo-yo up and catch!

    7. Elevator
Start by throwing a long sleeper. Hold your yo-yo hand out in front of you, palm is facing down. Now with your left index finger you are going to pick up the string, your finger should be between your body and the string, NOT in front of the string. Now lift the string up, which raises the yo-yo, as your bringing your left hand up, you should be bringing your right hand down, until the yo-yo is hanging about half way between your two hands. Now you bring the string into the grove of the yo-yo by bringing your yo-yo hand straight out towards the yo-yo, however you are not raising your yo-yo hand until you have the string in the groove. Once the string is in place bring your yo-yo hand under and in front of the yo-yo, then bring your yo-yo hand up to rest against the string that the yo-yo is resting on. By giving the string a slight push with your yo-yo hand, the yo-yo should do something like a flip, kind of like a ferris wheel going around. Now once you do one or two flips, stop and bring your yo-yo hand down and then your left hand follows, the yo-yo should come off the string. You can end with a loop if you wish.
